ELR Autumn Steam Gala - 2024

DSC_18858.jpg

The usual 3 day Steam Gala - Friday 11/10 to Sunday 13/10/2024 with 3 guest engines for this Event
BR 2-10-0 Class 9F - 92134
Furness Railways 0-4-0 Tender Engine - Fr 20
0-4-0 Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 Saddle Tank " J N Derbyshire"
plus home fleet engines
SR Bullied Pacific - 34092 "City of Wells"
LMS 0-6-0 "Jinty" - 47298.
L & Y railway 0-6-0- Saddle Tank - 752 running as BR 11456
L & Y Pug 0-4-0 ST No.19 in disguise as 11243,
Hunslet 2890 0-6-0 "Douglas"
8 engines in total with some interesting combination as well - a 15 coach pull by the 9F on Saturday night (pity it was dark when it happened) and pity they didnt let Furness FR20 have a full run of the line and also limited use of Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 on the line limiting only as far as Burrs Halt.
For my limited time, Friday was the best for weather and a late start on Saturday and train delays forced me home when the rain started early afternoon. Sunday was also a late start, taking my better half who wanted a shop at Ramsbottom with dog walkies at Burrs.
Otherwise it was a very enjoyable gala running practically to timetable

K&WVR Autumn Steam Up. 2024

DSC_18725.jpg

Saturday 05/10/2024 - A lovely sunny day for October and the 2nd day of a three day steam up using mainly their home fleet and a guess engine being Terrier 0-6-0 Tank No, 72 "Fenchurch".
I headed for my usual location at top field for a couple of run pasts to Oxenhope and then down to Keighley banks till early afternoon before heading back home.
Engines in steam
Guest engine - London Brighton & South Coast Railway Class A1 Stroudley Terrier 0-6-0T No. 72 'Fenchurch'
Home fleet - LMS Ivatt 2-6-0 - 41241 in K&WVR livery
L & Y 0-6-0 Tender Engine -52044 (957)
LNWR Coal Tank 0-6-2 - 1054
BR STD 4MT 4-6-0 - 75078
LMS Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0 - 45596 Bahamas" back from main line running.

Yeah, It was an ok gala - called a steam up in this case as it mainly used all their running home fleet to keep costs down and services seemed well supported as well. The time table seemed to run well being only a few minutes down while I was there.
As from the photographers side, locations are getting limited unless you travel on the services or have a pass, but that is down to me having limited time for both options. Willl be back again and hoping to have more time to travel and stay longer.

Ribble Steam Railway Autumn Gala - 2024

DSC_18596.jpg

28/09/2024 - Sunday and the Autumn Steam gala at the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston docks.
5 engines in steam today -
0-4-0 Furness Railways - Fr 20 - oldest running Steam engine in the country
0-4-0 Andrew Barclay Saddle Tank " J N Derbyshire" in a controversial livery
0-4-0 newly restored 0-4-0 well tank - "The King" built by E Burrows.
0-4-0 Saddle Tank - Grant Ritchie 272/1894
0-6-0 Bagnall 2680 1942 Saddle Tank - "Courageous"
I arrived at the swing bridge just in time to catch newly restored "The King" on the 09.45 goods from Preston Riversway Station down to Strand Road with 0-4-0 Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 Saddle Tank " J N Derbyshire" in a controversial livery on the back of the consist. Moving around the bend to the banks of the River Ribble, I caught the returning train a few minutes later and then headed for the Station.
Things here were starting to happen, photographing locos for later in the day outside the sheds. On the station, engines moving around for the first service train at 10.45 down the line. Jumping aboard here, I had a ride along the line to strand road and back. A quick look around the museum to look at the rolling stock - future project to get back into steam More pictures outside and then a look into the workshop to see work in progress - GWR Tank 5643 was their main priority, expecting it to be finish by this this time next year and then probably 4079 Woolton Hall somewhere in the queue which looks like a 5 year project at the moment (other engines coming out of ticket jumping the queue).
It was then back to the swing bridge after more photographs before heading back home.
An enjoyable morning with good improvements at the station (children's play ground - giving more photo opportunities and the usual friendly staff.

ELR - Autumn Steam Gala - 2023

DSC_16947.jpg

13th - 15th October - A three day steam gala starting on Friday in heavy rain, at Burrs with a 30 wagon goods train with guest engine 8f - 48305 reacting a scene where a failed diesel was being rescued and also being banked by the "Jinty". - Alas the 8F failed with a injector problem but soon fixed and back in service later in the day. The weather did in prove later in the day.
Saturday continued with heavy showers and another visit to Burrs for me in the afternoon and Sunday was a bright cold day and I spent a morning at Irwell Vale.
Guest engines - LMS Stanier 8F - 48305 from the GCR.
LMS Stanier Jubilee - 45690 running out its boiler ticket on the ELR.
SR Bullied Pacific - 34072 "257 Squadron" on loan for the summer
SR Bullied Pacific - 34092 "City of Wells" back after maintanance completed.
L & Y Pug 0-4-0 ST No.19 in disguise as 11243
L & Y railway 0-6-0- Saddle Tank - 752 running as BR 51456
LMS 0-6-0 "Jinty" - 47298.
MSC 0-6-0 Tank No.32 "Gothenberg"
Another good Gala put on by the ELR with 8 engines in steam during the event. It would have been nice to have City of Wells double heading instead of banking the 8f on Sunday. Another Gala which clashed with other steam events around the country

GCR-Autumn Steam Gala - 2023

DSC_16617.jpg

A four day festival of steam starting from Thursday 5th October until Sunday 8th October on the Great Central Railway between Lougborough and Leicester North Station using double tracks for most of the railway and freight trains between the regular passenger services. I arrived around lunchtime on Friday and proceeded to Kinchley lane and joined the large crowd of photographers.
Saturday started of at Woodthorpe and was amazed how this location had changed - for the worse, with all the building developments
A quick visit then to Loughborough before heading back to Woodthorpe village and walking out towards Quorn.
Sunday - A few minutes stop off at Swithland Res before stopping at Rothley for an hour. Then to Buddon Lane in Quorn before finishing early at Quorn Station.
My first visit for about 3 years due to covid and holidays abroad - Still one of the best steam galas in the country.

Ribble Steam Railway - Autumn Gala -2023

DSC_17666.jpg

30/09 & 01/10/2023 - A drive pass on Saturday and a couple of hours Sunday morning was all the time I could spare to see these locomotives running the line around the swing bridge .
Engines I saw running - one of my favorites - Furness Railways - 0-4-0 - FR20
Guest engine -Hudswell Clarke Works No 750 "Waleswood" 0-4-0ST - my first viewing of this locomotive
Hawthorn Leslie 3931/1938 'Linda' No. 21
Services seemed quite full with top & tail services down to Strand Road but the weather - Rain on both days spoiled the line side photography for me.
Still a enjoyable couple of hours for me

Leek & Rudyard Lake Autumn Steam Gala - 2023

DSC_16484.jpg

17/09/2023 - I have passed by this Railway little narrow gauge many times but never had the time to stop and look around. They were having their Autumn Gala and it seemed a perfect time to come and visit this narrow gauge railway
Located at Rudyard Station in the North Staffordshire Peak District, it offers a great family day out alongside Rudyard Lake. The railway is located just outside Leek and is not far from Alton Towers and the borders of Cheshire and Derbyshire. The railway is a 10.25 inch gauge which is equivalent to half size Narrow Gauge. The trains run whatever the weather and all are covered coaches. Since 2016 the railway has incorporated the locomotives and rolling stock of the former Isle of Mull Railway, including engines Frances, Victoria and Glen Auldyn into the fleet.
Steam Locomotives running today include - "Merlin"
"Lady Jane Grey"
"King Arthur"
"Nelly"
"Waverley"
"Victoria"
The line runs for about a mile or so running partly along side Rudyard Lake giving good views of the lake and along side a well maintained footpath well used by walkers and their dogs ,which carries on along the lake for a few miles, the railway stopping at Hunthouse Wood. Passangers can alight and get on the train at various halts.
A Very nice first time visit with very friendly staff.

Bancroft Mill, Barnoldswick

DSC_16098~0.jpg

27/07/2023 - A visit with a difference - Bancroft Mill Engine Museum, Barnoldswick. A ride out with "Preston Chicken Chasers" motorcycle club took us to this destination to the home of the largest working Mill Steam Engine in Lancashire.
Established in 1982,there aim is to maintain a link to the town’s cotton heritage, by preserving.
In the weaving shed they have three looms, one of which we believe was in use at the mill before it closed. They currently weave with the Cooper and the Pilling looms. The Pilling loom has a Jacquarette and is used to weave our souvenir tea towels, which you can buy in the shop, the Cooper loom produces a plain cloth, very much like the bulk of the production at the mill when it was in operation. Also on display is a large collection of artefacts from the weaving industry which brought so much employment to the region.

They have the original Lancashire boiler which powered the engine, driving all the looms and other machinery in the mill. There is a smaller Cornish boiler, which they now use on Steaming Days.

In a separate building they have a Smith and Eastwood engine, which ran Green’s Mill in Bradley until 1978. The engine was transported to there site early this century and was rebuilt by the volunteers, It ran again for the first time on site in 2017.

K&WVR - Flying Scotsman Anniversary Festival May 2023

DSC_15878.jpg

26/05/2023 Friday - A quick visit to the line for one of the running days whilst it was at the K&WVR. It was a glorious sunny morning as I arrived at Top Field to catch the 2nd round trip of the day, staying on the RHS to catch it in the sun. For the third running I swopped sides into the field but by then the sky had clouded over and then decided to head home. Due to the length of the train, 60103 had BR STD 2 - 78022 as a banker, because it could not run around at Oxenhope. A pity really as it was then dragged back to Keighley.
The Diesel service was class 20 - 20092 and BR std 4 75078 was added to this later in the day for a swop around. The adding of this at Haworth caused the services to run late by a few minutes,
All in all, the Flying Scotsman train was fully loaded and a nice sunny day at the start and an enjoyable day out - probably manic over the bank holiday weekend.

ELR -"Flying Scotsman100th Anniversary" running days also 2999 "Lady of Legend"

DSC_15369.jpg

Saturday - 11/03/2023 - The line officially reopens again after a period of maintenance of the track bed.
On the first day running were LNER A3 60103 "Flying Scotsman" and guest engine - GWR new build Saint class - 2999 "Lady of Legend" which were running hourly services from Bury to Rawtenstall and return.
A DMU service ran from Bury to Heywood.
I managed to fit in two runs of each by staying at Irwell Vale Station before having other commitments in the afternoon.
The snow from the previous days was still around in places and I got the best of the weather before rain set in in the afternoon.
Saturday 18/03/2023 - Decided to get the motor bike out this time and stopped off at Ewood Bridge before traveling onto Bury and then onto Summerseat Foot crossing. (Big Mistake - forced into dropping the bike to avoid and accident - no damage to bike then got nearly drowned in two heavy rain showers around Bury - weather fine at home.)
Same line up and time table as previous week with L & Y Pug 0-4-0 ST No.19 in disguise as 11243 on shunting demos in Casltecroft yard.

DSC_15142~0.jpg

A 4 day Spring Steam gala from Thursday 9/03/2023 to Sunday 12/03/2023 with a difference - a cold blast from the north brought a snow storm on the first day of the gala with more falls over night into Friday. Fridays timetable was rewritten but still 30 minutes delay to that time table but a beautiful day with blue skies and deep snow around.
A distinct LMS feel to this Gala with 3 LMS blacks 5`s and 2 LMS Jubilee`s plus some of their home fleet made up the rest of the Locomotives for this Gala.
Home fleet Black 5 - 45212 with 45407"Lancashire Fusilier and 44871

Last Days of the North East Lancs Loop line

44949_colour.jpg

This collection contains mostly scanned pictures which my father - Geoffrey Robinson took back in the early 1960`s during the last days of steam on the old Rose Grove - Padiham - Gt Harwood - Blackburn loop line. Known as the North East Lancashire loop Line.
Pictures include Wake Week Holiday specials to the seaside and the demolishion of Great Harwood railway station and track removal, plus a few pictures from surrounding areas.

I have also colourised a few of these pictures and can be found at the front of this album, the B & W images can still be found further back in this album.

XXXX - Please do not copy any of this images without permission - most are copy written to the Author. XXXX

If anyone has any photographs of trains on the loop line they would like to donate to this collection (whatever condition) please e-mail them to me.
Full creditation will of course be given to the photographer who took them

02/01/2023 - Fare-Wells for a while on the ELR

DSC_14989.jpg

02/01/2023 - A Farewell to SR Pacific -34092 "City of Wells" with its last running day as it goes for into the workshops at the end of todays services for renewal of its 10 year Boiler Ticket which means a strip down of the boiler testing and rebuilding. Also the line is being closed to allow essential track replacements and repairs in several places until the Spring Steam Gala in March.
SR Pacific -34092 "City of Wells" had three runs along the line today and I caught the first run at Ewood Bridge and then onto Rawtenstall to catch its run around the carriages and departure for Heywood. I caught up with "Wells" arriving and departing at Heywood and I then carried on to Ramsbottom to catch its arrival and departure on its second run. Whilst leaving Ramsbottom it was quickly halted with a problem with a carriage door handle, which gave me time to head again to get to Ewood Bridge again for the near end of this run. By this time it was time for me to head for home and the light was fading and most of its final run would have been in near darkness. Also running on the 2nd path was a 2 set DMU - both services very well attended !

ELR Autumn - L & Y Themed Steam Gala

DSC_14695.jpg

14/10/2022 to 16/10/2022 - A three day Steam event for the ELR Autumn Steam Gala and being 100 years since the merger of the L & Y and the LNWR - a L & Y steam Gala was order of the weekend. A great line up of L & Y & LNWR engines assembled for the Steam Gala -
Guest Engine LNWR Coal Tank 0-6-2 - 1054 from the K & W V Railway
Guest Engine Class 25 - L & Y 0-6-0 Tender Engine -52044 (957) also from K & W V Railway.
L & Y Class 27 0-6-0 Tender Engine 52322 (1300)
L & Y Class 23 0-6-0 ST steam locomotive 51456 (752)
L & Y Pug 0-4-0 ST No.19 in disguise as 51241
also running on various days SR Pacific 34092 "City of Wells" on its last Gala before 10 year ticket runs out.
BR Std Tank - 2-6-4-T - 80097
GWR 0-6-2-Tank - 5643
& 0-4-0 Sentinel "Ann" shunting in Castlecroft Yard.
L & Y 0-4-0 "Pug" 51208 from K & W V R (not in running condition) on display at Bury Station.
(With 60009 "Union of South Africa to view in the transport Museum)
So what to say about this Gala - No big named famous engines imported for this Gala but it didn`t need them !! This line up of Steam Locomotives was as good as I have seen at any Gala since "Steel Steam & Stars" at Llangollen years ago.
Lots of effort went into this Gala by lots of staff with photo shoots at Castlecroft and Buckly Wells and even extending the viewing area at Ramsbottom Sidings for the "Pug" shunting. - would like to see this happening more often.
The weather was reasonable with a few showers during the three days and the sun did shine on quite a few occasions. The time table seemed a little slack at times that being mainly due to myself arriving at locations with plenty of time to spare but it mainly ran to time which was another plus for the gala.
I must rate this as one of the best I have been too. Good Un ELR !!!
