The Roberts Engine237 viewsThe Roberts engine at Bancroft is a two cylinder horizontal cross-compound engine. ‘Compound’ means that the steam first passes through the high pressure cylinder (James) and then the low pressure cylinder (Mary Jane) to extract as much energy from the steam as possible. Efficiency is further improved by a condenser in the cellar which condenses the exhaust steam creating a vacuum which increases the effective pressure across the low pressure cylinder.

The Bradley Engine237 viewsThis engine, built by Smith Bros and Eastwood of Bradford is a two cylinder tandem compound (one cylinder behind the other) originally installed at Peter Green’s mill at Low Bradley near Skipton in 1901. This mill also closed in 1978, with the engine remaining in situ until the buildings were converted to housing in 2003.
