ELR 1940`s Weekend - 2019

DSC_16376~0.jpg

27/05/2019 -Bank holiday Monday and the last day of a three day event and the end to a smashing 1940`s event. Not sure how the other two days had gone but it seemed a quiet start as i boarded the first service to Bury. A diesel on the front of the service did not bode well for the rest of the day. Arriving at Bury, these thoughts soon dispersed as the entertainment was in full swing on the station. Trains seemed fairly well loaded with passengers and plenty in 1940`s costumes.
locomotives running -
Gresley A4 - 60009 "Union of South Africa"
BR 2-6-4 Std Tank - 80097
MSC No.32 0-6-0 tank engine "Gothenberg" in Thomas the Tank guise
Diesel Class 24 - D5054 "Phil Southern"
A very interesting visit to the Transport Museum followed - (needs a follow up visit) and more entertainment on the station before traveling onto Ramsbottom and more entertainment and displays - The military displays had vanished by this time and by the time I got back to Rawtenstall, the Germans had been forced to retreat and no sign of them either. But "The Washboard Resonators" were playing their gig and well worth watching.
All in all, a good day out, but the crowds were not as big as other times, possibly due to the weather and other events.

K&WV Railway Spring Steam Gala - 2019

DSC_15589.jpg

Saturday 09/03/2019 - Not a day to put a dog out ! - A ride along the line was the order of the day due to hail, rain and winds.
I arrived at Oxenhope around 10.00am and boarded the already nearly full 4 car Vintage train service bound for Keighley departing behind Coal Tank -1054 at 10.25 picking up 43924 on the rear on the way there plus loads more punters at Haworth making standing room only for lots of people. Arriving on time at Keighley, I alighted to take some photographs with the idea of travelling back to Ingrow west. Alas not - the next departure was an express service back to where I came from and so a wait on a cold rain swept station ensued until the 12.20 service came along. Alighting at Ingrow West, I followed the crowds to the chippy opposite the station then down the station yard to view "Bahamas" which was on static display until late afternoon and the various museums there. Next, boarded train back to Oxenhope and a viewing of the museum shed there. At this point a phone call from home putting an end of todays visit and and a early exit home.
Engines running
Guest Engine - LMS Ivatt 2 6 0 - 46521
First gala appearance since 2000 - BR Std 2 2-6-0 - 78022
LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee - 45596 "Bahamas"
LMS 0-6-0 4F - 43924
LMS Ivatt tank - 41241
Webb Coal tank - 1054
LMS Black 5 4-6-0 - 45212
USA - 5820 "Big Jim"
with LNER steam crane in full swing at Oakworth
The weather spoiled it for me, plus timetabling of some services and only catching a glimpse of 45212 passing in the opposite direction with 45596 "Bahamas" not running until late in the afternoon and "Big Jim" being saved until Sunday.

GCR - Winter Steam Gala - 2019

DSC_15016~0.jpg

Another 3 day Steam event starting on Friday 25th Jan to Sunday 27th Jan.
Special guest visitor for the event was GWR 4-6-0 -7802 "Bradley Manor"
with the home fleet of - Stanier Black 5 - 45305
BR 4-6-0 -Std 5 - 73156
GWR - 4-6-0 - 6990 "Witherslack Hall"
BR 9F - 2-10-0 - 92214 "Leicester City"
Stanier 2-8-0 - 8F - 48624
BR Std 2MT - 2-6-0 78018
Ivatt Class 2MT - 2-6-0 - 46521
Fowler 3F - 0-6-0 "Jinty"- 47406
& Austerity 0-6-0 Saddle tank - 68030 at Loughborough.
plus DMU service.
I travel down Friday evening for an early visit on Saturday morning - starting at Woodthorpe and then the surrounding area but going to Kinchley Lane in the afternoon. The weather forcast wasnt good but cold and i decided to risk it anyway which turned out to be a fair decision. Sunday started in a similar way - but colder still so headed to Quorn and a series of trips along the line calling at all the stations and a quick shed visit at Loughborough.
The wind started to pick up which added to the chill factor and I finished the day sat in Quorn Carpark over looking the station until the light faded.
The usual variety of passenger trains ( fast and local) with freight trains and the travelling post office set of coaching always makes it one of the best spectacles to see on the persevered lines in this country.
Whilst the trains where quite well loaded, there was a lack of photographers in the normal locations from previous years - possibly the cold weather and the banning of line side passes to a lot of regular photographic members of the GCR. - this could result in a lot of people not renewing their memberships... A big loss of volunteers to the Railway.
A good event and highly rated by me - but I have been to better ones in previous years.

ELR Autumn Steam Gala - 2018

DSC_14170.jpg

Back for another 3 day steam gala event on the East Lancashire Railway starting on Friday 19/10/2018 with a mild morning spent at Irewell Vale station and giving the drone a couple of flights also before having to work in the late afternoon.
Back on Saturday morning starting at Burrs Country park also with the drone before heading to Ramsbottom for lunch, then Rawtenstall and then later at Heap Bridge to catch the Duchess running correct way around.
Sunday was a later start at Summerseat / Spring Bank farm then onto Thomson Fold before heading home when the weather changed to drizzle and then rain.
Guest engines running - LMS Coronation class Pacific - 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland"
GWR 28xx Class 2-8-0 -2857
GWR Churchward '42XX' Class 2-8-0T No.4270
with SR Bullied pacific - 4-6-2 - 34092 "City of Wells"
L & Y Aspinal 0-6-0 52322
MSC 0-6-0 Tank No.32 "Gothenberg"
Another excellent Steam gala which ran to time most of the Gala - any late runnings were soon made right.
The Duchess was splendid and also my favorite engine. Only gripe was it was paired top and tailed with city of wells some of the times , both being at the wrong ends of the train.
Thxs ELR for putting on another great show.

60103 "Flying Scotsman" Riding and Viewing Experiences @ ELR, Rawtenstall.

Untitled-2~10.jpg

Saturday - 28/04/2018 - Viewing Experience - I intended to go to Rawtenstall to take a few drone pictures whilst "Flying Scotsman was stationed in the side platform. I arrived just as Peak class 45 diesel - 45108 was about to leave towards Bury and a tryout of a new lens.
After 5 minutes, once the peak had left, I had the drone in the air and got the pictures I wanted and seemed a shame to return home after that short time.
Making inquiries at the ticket office I was told of a space in 10 minutes and quickly paid my dues and join the waiting group in the carriage. There then followed a talk, whilst waiting, about "Flying Scotsman" before being allowed to progress to the support coach and then a journey along the passage way in the tender through onto the footplate. Time here for a few pictures etc in various posses before exiting onto the platform. I was luckily to catch "City of Wells" arriving from Bury and able to add a few more pictures from the cab of "Flying Scotsman"
A trip for just a few drone pictures which turned into a very enjoyable experience lasting a couple of hours!!
Saturday - 12/05/2018 - Riding Experiences - A chance for the public to ride behind Flying Scotsman. I wanted to photograph the engine over the ELR. A visit to Rawtenstall to capture it arriving and leaving and then onto Heywood to catch it arriving whilst passing through the valley on business.
Sunday - 13/05/2018 - Riding Experence - Back again.. and a sunny day too at Ramsbottom and then onto Burrs and then Heap Bridge, taking the drone also to Burrs to try a few flights. ( videos available under appropriate picture in folder)
Saturday 25/08/2018 - August bank holiday and 60103 Flying Scotsman back for another 4 days of running along the line. I managed to catch the first service off Rawtenstall with 60103 & 34092 but had to leave to for a shift at work later.
Wednesday 05/09/2018 - A trip in the late morning to capture 60103 passing by using the drone at Irewell Vale before having to return for a shift at work - video links available under appropriate pictures.
Friday - 07/09/2018 - 60103 "Flying Scotsman" at Ewood Bridge & the Quarry near Heapy Bridge on the 12.25 service from Rawtenstall to Bury and then onto Heywood.

ELR "Tornado" running weekend 2018

DSC_11067_.jpg

Thursday 29/03/2018 - Straight to Rawtenstall after work to catch 60163 "Tornado" arriving and departing Rawtenstall with the first service train and then home for lunch, I then returned in the afternoon with the drone and camera to Burrs country park to catch some more action with one run past each way of Tornado and other services.
Friday 30/03/2018 - A quick stop at Townsend Fold and Ewood bridge whilst wasting an hour to photograph more action
Saturday 31/03/2018 - A return to Rawtenstall and this time - a trip up to Bury and behind Peak class 45 diesel - 45108. On arrival, I photographed the action of arrivals and departures plus 60103 "Flying Scotsman" and 34092 "City of Wells" - both on static display. I then returned to Rawtenstall to go line side at the right side of the fence just north of Ramsbottom station at the end of the goods yard at a factory private crossing and next to a playground before returning home late afternoon.
Sunday - 01/04/2018 - Day off with Family
Monday - 02/04/2018 - A drive past Heywood Station and on to Rawtenstall catching LMS 2-6-0 Crab - 13065 arriving and departing and 60163"Tornado" departing Rawtenstall in miserable weather conditions.
Over all, a very nice weekend photographing with the camera and a very nice prestige engine running along the line, Pity the weather wasnt nicer for the time of year. But well done ELR for putting on the event and running to schedule. (Would have loved a night shoot with Tornado, Flying Scotsman and Union of South Africa)

K&WV Railway Spring Steam Gala - 2018

DSC_10961~0.jpg

10/03/2018 - Saturday...and day two of a three day event of which I could only make an afternoon visit due to working the rest of the time. Over night rain and melting snow from earlier in the week had caused localised flooding on the way to the event and standing water and puddles plus muddy footpaths made it unpleasant at Top Field were I usually go, so only stopped for an hour or so before decending on Keighley Banks for firmer, dryer ground.
2 guest engines brought in for this event - BR Std Pacific -Britannia class 4-6-2 - 70013 "Oliver Cromwell"
and S&DJR Fowler Class 7F 2-8-0 No. 53808
and Ian Rileys LMS Black 5 - 4-6-0 - 44871 which has been on the K&WVR for a couple of months
Plus the home fleet of
BR Std 4MT - 75078
LMS Fowler 0-6-0 43924
USA US ATC S160 "Big Jim"- 5828
LNWR Webb Coal Tank 0-6-2 -1054
Taff Vale Railway Class O2 0-6-2T No. 85, - not seen on Saturday afternoon
Nunlow - not seen on Saturday afternoon
Another excellent afternoon out despite the dull cloudy weather and rain later in the afternoon.A hectic timetable running a few minutes schedule and a lot of the action was to be seen around the station limits at Keighley with positioning movements
I left around 16.00 to catch 45699 running a CME on the mainline from Carlisle to Farington Junction via the S & C Railway

ELR Spring Steam Gala - 2018

DSC_10802~0.jpg

03/03/2018 - I thought "I must be mad here" - minus 3 degrees, snow on the ground and very very cold. I decided on a location where I could sit in the car and keep warm and just jump out and take a photograph and then return to the warm. Location - Rawtenstall near the level crossing at the near end to the station platforms and then after lunch - Irewell Vale Halt.
Guest Engines - LMS 4-6-0 Jubilee Class - 45690 "Leander"
LNER A4 Pacific - 4-6-2 60009 "Union of South Africa"
Home fleet engines running include -
34092 "City of Wells"
52322 - L & Y "A" Class 0-6-0
13065 LMS 2-6-0 Crab
Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0 2890 + tender
LMS 4-6-0 - Black 5 - 45212
LMS 4-6-0 - Black 5 - 45407 - as 45157 (not seen whilst there by myself)
I arrived early on Saturday morning for the first departure. A long wait ensued as the first train was over an hour late and then continued to run as per timetable till after lunch. Being at the north end of the line , I missed the double headed Black 5 freight but this was made up for by the double headed 0-6-0`s with Crab banker. I left at this point to go mainline to catch Jubilee - Galitea on "The Pennine Limited"
Working Sunday until 3.00 pm, I then travelled to Ramsbottom via Ewood Bridge for a few more pictures hoping to catch the freight again... but it was cancelled and then returned home after a few more pictures
There was lots of talk before the gala about cancelling it due to the weather and Fridays idea of topping and tailing all services was a great idea in my opinion - pity I had to work. The weather certainly put off a lot of people travelling on the services but was another good gala despite the conditions . Well done for going ahead with it.

Test Runs of 35018 "British India Line"

DSC_16778.jpg

18/05/2017 - SR 4-6-2 - Merchant Navy class - 35018 "British India Line" on 5M51 - a test run from Carnforth to Hellifield and return with pictures from Giggleswick Station, entering Long Preston and Hellifield Station. The Engine ran painted black and with a TOPS number 98818 chalked on the cab sides and smokebox and also the nameplates off another SR Region pacific "Bodmin"
17/08/2017 - Another test run around the Carnforth - Hellifield - Blackburn circuit. Still black and no nameplate but now painted Tops numbers on its cab sides. Running nearly three hours late, I managed to see it near Eldroth, Long Preston, Hellifield Station & Hellifield Green plus Langho... and pass it at Settle Junction and Chatburn.. but no pictures.
35018 "British India Line" was one of the first batch of twenty SR Merchant Navy Class steam locomotives to be built by the Southern Railway in 1945.She was withdrawn from service in August 1964 and was sold onto Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, South Wales where she arrived in December of the same year.
"British India Line" was to remain at Barry Scrapyard for 16 years until November 1979 when she was purchased for preservation and in March 1980, she was moved to the Mid Hants Railway, she was later moved to a site in Portland in Dorset, but was moved once again in 2012 to the former 10A steam shed at Carnforth, Lancashire where since then she underwent a thorough restoration to working order and modern mainline standards.

K&WV Railway - Small Engines Gala - 2017

Untitled-1~1.jpg

Friday - 07/07/2017 and the first day of a three day Gala featuring the smaller engines and shunters of the K&WVR home fleet and a couple of guest engines as well. I had just a few hours in the morning and early afternoon before having to go to work later in the day. A cloudy start at top field between Haworth and Oxenhope with the drone & camera hoping to catch the guest engine - Austerity 0-6-0 - 71515 "Mech. Navvies Ltd" on its first run. Alas Coal Tank 1054 took its slot and due to limited time I move on to Keighley Bank for most of the time I had and to catch 2nd guest engine - L&SWR 0-4-2WT No 30587 running on the shuttle to Ingrow West and then calling in at Haworth Shed on the way home.
Nunlow also put in a fine performance as usual and also running Diesel shunter D0226 "Vulcan".
As it happens 71515 didnt run on friday due to a lack of paperwork.
A bit of a strange visit for me - An hourly timetable up and down the line which was fine. but not much else running on friday and whilst there but lots more promised for the weekend I was unable for me to attend due to work.

ELR Spring Steam Gala - 2017

DSC_14923b.JPG

Friday 10/03/2017 - The first of a three day steam gala. The rain had stopped as a called in at Ramsbottom on the way to Burrs country park. A great line up steam had been assembled to represent the scene of local shed "Lostock Hall."
Guest engine was LMS 8F 48624 from the GCR.
Local fleet running include - LMS Black 5`s - 45407 "Lancashire Fusilier" & 45212.
BR Std 4 - 76084
LMS Hughes Fowler Crab - 13065 - (not running Friday)
L & Y 0-6-0 - 52322
plus also SR Bullied pacific - 4-6-2 - 34092 "City of Wells"
Saturday 11/03/2107 - The weather was milder than Friday but still very overcast.
I started todays locations at the footcrossing near Summerseat before waking to Spring Bank farm before moving to Ewood Bridge and onto Townsend fold and the area.
Sunday 12/03/2017 - A lovely spring day which slowly cloulded over and light drizzle after I left.
I started at Ramsbottom after a late start as it seemed to be the best place without a wait. I moved on to the Heywood side and near Heapy Bridge before returning to my usual haunt at Burrs before returning home when the weather started to change.
A really great steam gala for the ELR with it running to the timetables and all the steam action. spoiled only by the dull weather
